Samer Allawi al jazeera afghanistan bureau chief kidnapped & charged by israeli terrorist govt

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel has arrested the Palestinian head of Al Jazeera’s Afghanistan bureau after he visited the occupied West Bank, charging him with belonging to Hamas, the satellite station said Tuesday.

It called for the immediate release of Samer Allawi, who had been remanded by an Israeli military court a week after being taken into custody while trying to cross from the West Bank into Jordan. He had been visiting family in the Palestinian city of Nablus.

An Israeli security official confirmed Allawi’s arrest and court appearance but gave no further details on the case.

Walied Al-Omary, Al Jazeera’s bureau chief in Israel and the Palestinian territories, said the military court accused Allawi of making contact with members of Hamas’s armed wing.

In Al Jazeera video footage from his court appearance, Allawi said: “There is nothing in this investigation that I believe harms Israel, like it is being claimed, or has any relationship with my work in this entire region.”

Islamist Hamas won a Palestinian election in 2006 and, a year later, took over the Gaza Strip in a brief civil war with the formerly dominant and more secular Fatah faction.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah holds sway in the West Bank, where his forces, along with the Israeli military, have curbed Hamas.

rape is a weapon israel has been using for over six decades. see West Bank & Gaza aka the occupied territories

Guardian: The judges told the court: “The crime of rape damages and destroys a person’s soul … Due to the severity of the crime, the punishment must be clear and precise. The defendant committed the crime and like every other person, he must bear the consequences. No man is above the law.”

Katsav, 65, sobbed and interrupted the judges repeatedly. “You are all wrong. It’s all lies … The women know they are lying. They are laughing at this judgment.”

The former president was also ordered to pay 100,000 shekels (£17,000) to the rape victim and 25,000 shekels to each of the other victims.

PNN: Witnesses told PNN that soldiers stormed the village after five settlers were stabbed and killed in the nearby settlement of Itamar.

Israeli soldiers rounded up 20 men form the village and took them to unknown location, during the arrest soldiers hit and assaulted the detainees, Witnesses told PNN.

During the house-to-house search in the village Israeli soldiers also assaulted an old man and his wife; local sources said both sustained light wounds.

Shortly after the attack in Itamar settlement large forces of Israeli military and police closed all roads around the settlement and engaged in a manhunt for the attacker who escaped the scene.

LA Times: Tensions between settlers and Palestinian villagers have been escalating for weeks. Founded in 1984, the Itamar settlement sits on land that was once controlled by the village of Awarta, said Awarta Mayor Qais Awwad.

In recent weeks, Palestinians have accused settlers in the area of chopping down hundreds of olive trees, burning Palestinians’ cars and shooting at villagers. Last week, Israeli soldiers were accused of using live gunfire to quell one clash, injuring 10 Palestinians and one settler.

Itamar’s settlers are considered among the most fervent, believing Israel has a historic and religious right to absorb the West Bank, which Israel seized during the 1967 Middle East War

Under Attack: Settler Violence against Palestinian Children in the Occupied Territory
This report documents the extent of settler attacks perpetrated against Palestinian children in the Occupied Territory. While settler violence has steadily increased since the beginning of the second Intifada in September 2000, the start of 2008 has marked a notable increase in settler attacks against Palestinian civilians, including children.
Since the beginning of 2008, OCHA has documented 19 child injuries and one child fatality as a result of settler attacks, with almost 70 per cent of the incidents occurring in Hebron. DCI/PS’ report is based on evidence gathered during the period January 2007 – June 2008 and is limited to settler attacks on Palestinian children in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The report highlights nine separate incidents of settler attacks including shootings, beatings and stone-throwing incidents, resulting in injuries to 12 Palestinian children.

The Palestine Papers, an Introduction

Over the last several months, Al Jazeera has been given unhindered access to the largest-ever leak of confidential documents related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There are nearly 1,700 files, thousands of pages of diplomatic correspondence detailing the inner workings of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. These documents – memos, e-mails, maps, minutes from private meetings, accounts of high level exchanges, strategy papers and even power point presentations – date from 1999 to 2010.

The material is voluminous and detailed; it provides an unprecedented look inside the continuing negotiations involving high-level American, Israeli, and Palestinian Authority officials.

Al Jazeera will release the documents between January 23-26th, 2011. They will reveal new details about:

  • the Palestinian Authority’s willingness to concede illegal Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem, and to be “creative” about the status of the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount;
  • the compromises the Palestinian Authority was prepared to make on refugees and the right of return;
  • details of the PA’s security cooperation with Israel;
  • and private exchanges between Palestinian and American negotiators in late 2009, when the Goldstone Report was being discussed at the United Nations.

Because of the sensitive nature of these documents, Al Jazeera will not reveal the source(s) or detail how they came into our possession. We have taken great care over an extended period of time to assure ourselves of their authenticity.

We believe this material will prove to be of inestimable value to journalists, scholars, historians, policymakers and the general public.

We know that some of what is presented here will prove controversial, but it is our intention to inform, not harm, to spark debate and reflection – not dampen it. Our readers and viewers will note that we have provided a comments section in which to express opinions. We present these papers as a service to our viewers and readers as a reflection of our fundamental belief – that public debate and public policies grow, flourish and endure when given air and light.
