I immediately questioned the decision, because I have spent all my life living in this community and know how well this hostel that was built about ten years ago at a cost of about $9,000,000 by Futures Fund has been serving the people. Guyana leases land at .37 cents/acre to Conservation International
The idea of conservation concessions has been around since 2000. It was introduced by an American charity called Conservation International, which realised the going rate for logging concessions was often so low that it could afford to outbid the foresters. It has since leased forests in Guyana—where it has 80,000 hectares of Upper Essequibo—and in Peru, Sierra Leone, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Mexico. But even in 2001 it reckoned that at $2 a hectare Ngoyla-Mintom was too dear. Its land in Essequibo costs a mere 37 cents a hectare.

Mining severely polluting the Essequibo & Omai Rivers of Guyana
Hundreds of miners, operating illegally in Quartz Hill and along the Omai River, are causing headaches for government, with one man being shot last week during clashes with security personnel of the Omai Mining Company.

Stabroek News: Following recent investigations of continuous pollution of the Essequibo River by some operators who discharge tailings waste into the waterway, more stringent actions against miners guilty of such breaches will be taken by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
“The GGMC, both the mines officers and environmental officers and technicians have to go out into the districts, that is the watercourses of the Essequibo, Cuyuni, Mazuruni, the Potaro, Mora and Siparuni and take action to prevent siltation of the creeks and rivers”, GINA quoted Benn as stating.
Over 25 Essequibo road sub-contractors still owed by Greek company
Stabroek News :: Monday, March 6th 2006More than 25 sub-contractors from Essequibo are still awaiting payments on outstanding accounts for work, fuel and materials supplied to Technodomi, the Greek company that was contracted to build the Essequibo Coast public road.The company, it is understood, owes in excess of $200M to the contractors. One contractor said the company owes him about $65M.Among these sub-contractors are Doodnauth Samaroo, Moen Insanally, Dax Contrac-ting Services, Frances Shurland and Sons, and Imam Bacchus and Sons.Meanwhile, the government and Technodomi have had a matter before the court for over four years, regarding breach of contract and liabilities.And since the Greek company pulled out, heavy-duty equipment and vehicles have been left in the open at Onderneeming and the Anna Regina Regional Office compound rusting away and sinking into the ground.Another fleet of vehicles and equipment is located in the compound east of the Essequibo Technical Institute.
