Yet another prisoner death

A 51-year-old remand inmate of the New Amsterdam prison died Sunday before receiving medical attention at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

Reports reaching the Chronicle states that Cheddi Brijbilal, formerly of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder, had sometime after 06:30 h complained to other inmates in his cell that he was feeling unwell.

Kaieteur News: After an almost three-month investigation, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has recommended that two senior prison officers be charged with manslaughter for the death of prison inmate Edwin Niles.
The two officers, who both hold the rank of Assistant Superintendent, are likely to appear in court today.
In a report to the DPP, police investigators had recommended that four prison officers, including two senior ranks, be charged with murder in connection with Niles’ death.

Kaieteur News: Police have implicated four prison officers, including two senior ranks, in the death of inmate Edwin Niles, and have recommended that they be charged with his murder.
One of the senior ranks is reportedly stationed at the Georgetown Prisons, while the other is stationed at Mazaruni.
Top police officials confirmed yesterday that the Director of Public Prosecutions is again in possession of the report on the case, which she had returned to the police for further details on the matter.
Kaieteur News understands the report concluded that Niles had been tortured to the extent that he suffered first and second degree burns, among other injuries.

Kaieteur News: Edwin Niles, the prisoner who was allegedly beaten after being found with seven rounds of .22 ammunition, died at the Georgetown Hospital at around 23:00 hrs last night. (NIles allegedly stole a pair of pants from a soldier which contained the said bullets)
Niles’ mother, Brenda Nurse, told Kaieteur News that a hospital staffer contacted her daughter last night and requested that she come to the hospital urgently.
When Ms. Nurse and her daughter arrived at the institution, they were informed that Niles had died. He was already wrapped in a sheet.
According to the relatives, a female prison officer who had guarded her son was present, but did not communicate with them.
“A prison officer had told me that his injuries were not life-threatening, but now he is dead,” she said.
