Will the Bolivarian Revolution End Coal Mining in Venezuela?

Plans for new coal mining in the Sierra de Perijá, the northwestern region of the state of Zulia, Venezuela, were suspended by President Hugo Chávez last year following anti-coal declarations by Chávez and several ministers. The Wayúu, Yukpa, and Barí indigenous communities who would have been displaced by the projects cautiously interpreted the suspension as a temporary sign of relief. But their struggle against coal mining has lasted a quarter of a century and will not conclude until mining concessions are repealed for good.

Petroleos de Venezuela SA turns to Euros for oil payments

CARACAS (AFP) — Venezuelan state oil giant PDVSA has decided to sign some oil contracts in euros in the face of a plummeting dollar, local media reported, citing officials.”There are some contracts in euros, contracts for crude, products and spot markets in euros. This is a subject which we are working on,” said energy minister and Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) chief, Rafael Ramirez, in an interview with the journal El Universal published Friday.

Mérida, March 18, 2008 (venezuelanalysis.com)- British Judge Paul Walker declared in a London courtroom today that the freezing of $12 billion in assets of the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA shall be revoked. The decision is a major defeat for the world’s largest oil company, ExxonMobil, which had won the temporary asset freeze on February 7th in a dispute with PDVSA over the nationalization of Exxon’s stake in a Venezuelan Orinoco River Belt project, known as Cerro Negro.
