Markets crash as big whitey tries to save capitalism from itself

without comments

Yahoo News: Bush sought to reassure panicking markets. “It’s going to take awhile to restore confidence in the financial system. But one thing people can be certain of is that the bill I signed is a big step toward solving this problem,” he said in San Antonio, Texas.
Nobody seemed reassured. Chaos in the financial system seemed to be growing by the minute.
The Dow industrials plunged below the 10,000 level for the first time in four years, and at one point were down as much as 800 points before recovering to close with a loss of 370. All sectors — not just financial companies — were being sold off.

US Coast Guard intercept submarine & keeps the 14 tons of cocaine

without comments

The U.S. Coast Guard says it intercepted a submarine-like vessel carrying 7 tons of cocaine off Central America’s coast.
The Coast Guard says a U.S. Navy aircraft spotted the 60-foot vessel Wednesday about 400 miles south of the Mexico-Guatemala border.
The Coast Guard sank the vessel after determining it was too unstable to be towed to port. [and what happened to the cocaine big whitey?]
The Coast Guard’s statement Friday did not say if anyone was arrested. Officials didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.
The bust came four days after the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy seized another homemade submarine carrying 7 tons of cocaine. That craft was towed to a Coast Rican port and four Colombians on board were arrested. [and what happened to the cocaine big whitey? was it sent to the United States to be destroyed?]

Black Canada: Plunder, Corruption and Crime in Africa - Barrick Gold & co

with one comment

And the world’s largest gold miner, Barrick Gold, has filed suit against a small Canadian book publisher over a new book detailing abuses tied to Canadian-owned businesses in Africa. Black Canada: Plunder, Corruption and Crime in Africa links Barrick Gold to the deaths of fifty-two Tanzanian miners buried alive in 1996. The mine was owned at that time by Vancouver-based Sutton and sold to Barrick in 1999. The authors of the book suggest Barrick acted with Sutton to prepare the deposit for large-scale development. Barrick Gold is seeking $6 million in damages from the book’s publisher, Ecosociety, and an injunction against its distribution.
