Dear Propaganda Press: There’s lots of speculation about what happened to Robeson Jr so I am sending this letter to clear the air and tell our side of what really happened.

This was evidently another “shakedown” attempt by some rogue policemen which went awry and degenerated to “road rage” and actual assault on a young man protesting the violation of his legitimate rights as a citizen.

There was no police chase or pursuit – Benn did not realize what was afoot and therefore did not stop with alacrity on police driving dangerously close alongside – excepting for noting the dangerous situation they were creating and identifying himself.

Vehicle tinting was approved by a permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs but, in any event, the vehicle’s front windows were down so passengers could be easily identified. The policemen did not ask for documents, or an explanation, with regards to the vehicle’s tinting on the road or at the station, nor have they asked up to press time.

The police assaulted Robeson by:

1. Pushing a cocked and loaded 9mm Glock pistol in his face while he was driving – Lindo

2. Slamming him twice against his car when he exited the vehicle, on their orders

3. Throwing him bodily into the back of their pickup while he was handcuffed – police driver

4. Putting their feet over his head while he was being taken to Brickdam Police Station.

Vehicle trunks interior and seating were maliciously damaged by the said police, in an aggressive search, at Brickdam Police Station, which unearthed nothing.

Police involved were three initially on the scene dressed in black and armed with pistols and four others arrived with AK47’s who were summoned as “back-up”.

Some pictures were taken by cell phone camera of the incident on Mandela Avenue. Robeson and his girlfriend were taunted by the police at the scene and at Brickdam police station. Witnesses have, also, come forward with respect to the incident.

The Minister was described as a “a puss” by policeman Lindo at the scene of the incident.

Robeson Benn is not known to the police (except by some on the East Coast who have repeatedly tried to shake him down), nor could he be a suspect in the circumstances they described. He is notably thin or “fine”.

The Benns intend to pursue this matter to the fullest extent in the court by private action and by requesting administrative action and procedure reviews of police methods.

Citizens are asked to co-operate, lawfully, with the police but are asked to make sure that witnesses are at hand and that video photo and voice records are taken of their encounters on the streets with the police.

The actions of a few rogue policemen should not be allowed to sully the reputation of the Police Force — which has a proud history – nor interfere with the obvious need for police-citizen cooperation which is surely needed at this time.
