The power of Freddie Kissoon’s pen in Guyana

Dear Editor,The effectiveness of the pen is that it pierces the conscience of those who err. There is no pain from physical assault, the pen inflicts pain to the mind of those who in their palaces are protected by their armies and forces; those who wear the suits, jackets and ties and are of great standing in society. The power of Freddie Kissoon’s pen is unmatched in this context. I am yet to see another columnist in Guyana with the courage, consistency, and passion to tell it like it is.
Freddie Kissoon’s pen knows no boundary; it relentlessly pursues and exposes the injustices at ever level of society. Freddie Kissoon’s greatest gift, and a timely one I must add, is his ability to make otherwise complex issues simple, attractive and interesting. It is his most dangerous weapon against those he exposes continuously. In his writings he is most capable of capturing the interest of the non-academic and those who have never heard of philosophy, or have interest in politics, etc.
There is a certain balance in his work than puts him above partisan politics. He has no favourites. Burnham gets it as much as Cheddi; supporters on both sides can claim no victory against the other. Jadgeo cannot smile when Corbin’s sins are made public. Jagdeo has to be worried that he will be next, because Kissoon has no friends in this struggle for justice and fairness in the country he so loves. There is no Indian or African group that could claim Freddie as their own. This man’s friend is what he and many of us see as truth.
There is something about the truth that no intellectual can convince the masses as otherwise. No phantom writer can dispel and no soup drinker can change the truth. I have a friend who buys the newspapers only to read the back pages. You know what is on the back pages of every newspapers. I had an interesting conversation with him a week ago. He was discussing with me about Sigmund Freud, and asking if I could send him some of his works. I was surprised that a baggy-jeaned, dance-hall-loving 23-year-old had this sudden interest in Freud. I asked him about it and he said, “Do you read Freddie Kissoon?”
Amidst the controversy of Kissoon’s recent lecture at UG, I can only advise him to take his lecture countrywide, to every town and every region in Guyana. People are listening, the truth is always an offence, never a sin. The youths are listening, the nation is listening, never mind the silence, nor the few paid critics.
I advise him to keep writing his columns. Forces are at work to silence Freddie. Their fear and confusion know no limit.Norman Browne
