Barbadian cancelled Mashramani visit after Lusignan & Bartica massacres
Dear Editor,
I am a Barbadian, and I am sure I speak for all my fellow Barbadians in expressing my shock and horror at the recent massacres in your country, which have tarnished your country’s good name internationally.
I was due to attend the recent Mash celebrations again, but upon hearing of the first massacre, I became skeptical; but when the second occurred, I immediately went on-line and cancelled my flight.
I regret to say, sir, that I have no confidence in the authorities and the security forces to guarantee my safety as a visitor to your country.
There is no other country under any system of government where bandits can attack police stations with impunity, killing officers on duty, and not have so much heat generated upon them that they will think hell has come on earth.
It is times like those that whoever is in power, whoever is rich or poor or whoever is white or black becomes irrelevant.
The only relevant thing, then, is to stand by your oath as a policeman, to serve and to protect.
I was a cop before, and I can tell you any injury to an officer on duty, far less death, more than inspired us to go beyond the call of duty. There seems to be something wrong in Guyana, and it does not smell very pleasant.
But wait a minute! Civilians shooting soldiers? There was a popular calypso in Barbados a few year ago called “Only Bout Here”, only in Guyana.
It is time the authorities act like mature people and forget the politics and race for the good of the country and its people.
