Guyanese Close in on Slaughter Suspects

Georgetown, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) Guyanese police circulated photos and asked for citizen cooperation Monday to capture six suspects, five identified only by nickname, in last week’s murder of a dozen people in the mining town of Bartica.Meanwhile, Guyana is observing a day of national mourning for the victims of the massacre February 17, which may have been executed with complicity of local residents.
Official media reported three suspects are being questioned for such collaboration, one of them a sailor who possibly crewed a boat used by the assailants.
Fear still reigns in Bartica where classes are suspended and business and offices close earlier so that workers can arrive home while it is light.
Authorities blame the murders on a gang of African descendants, led by Rondell el Bello Rawlings who is wanted for other violent crimes, and are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to his capture.
Rawlins claimed responsibility in the late January slaughter of 11 people in the small village of Lusignan, in reprisal for what he claimed was the kidnapping of his concubine.
