PRESS RELEASE

About 2220h. last night Friday January 25, 2008, armed gunmen in a grey motor car discharged several rounds at the ranks at the Guard Room of the Guyana Police Force Headquarters, Eve Leary, injuring Constable 17781 Scott in his left side back and Special Constable 13709 Mc Almont on his right hand and left thigh. The building was also damaged with several windows being shattered.

Constable Scott was treated at a private hospital and sent away while Special Constable McAlmont was admitted a patient in a stable condition.

Later, at about 0200h. today Saturday January 26, 2008, a group of about 15 to 20 heavily armed men launched a simultaneous attack on five homes at Track A, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, killing eleven persons in the process and injuring three others. This is an act of terror.

The persons killed are Clarence Thomas, 48 years; Vidya Thomas, 12 years; Rohan Thomas, 11 years; Mohandai Gourdat, 32 years; Gobin Harilall, 4 years; Seegopaul Harilall, 10 years; Dhanrajee Ramsingh, 52 years; Seecharran Rooplall, 56 years; Rajpattie Ramsingh, 11 years; Shalim Baksh, 52 years; and Shazam Mohamed, 22 years.

Howard Thomas, 19 years; Robert Thomas, 5 years; and Nadir Mohamed, 48 years, sustained injuries and are patients at the GPHC.

A total of five (5) 5.56 calibre and thirty five (35) 7.62 x 39 spent shells, along with two (2) live 7.62 x 39 rounds, six (6) 7.62 x 39 warheads, five (5) 12 gauge cartridges and one (1) spent 12 gauge cartridge were recovered at the scenes by the police.

The Police Ballistic Laboratory has since matched the shells as follows:

The five 5.56 shells match 5.56 shells found at the scene of Drakes’ murder. The thirty five 7.62 x 39 spent shells match eighteen shells found at the scene of Minister Satyadeow Sawh’s murder, the murder of the MMC security guards at Two Brothers gas station, Brumell and Scott at Agricola and the attack at Canal No. 2 in 2007.

The Joint Services wishes to express its sympathy towards all family members who have suffered losses of their relatives and have upgraded their security arrangements. Joint patrols and roadblocks are being conducted in the city and on the East Coast of Demerara, while investigations into the two incidents are being conducted.

The Joint Services will pursue and conduct robust operations in order to apprehend these criminals who are terrorizing our citizens.

The Joint Services are advising members of the public to be extra vigilant at this time and urge that they report any suspicious or strange activity which they may observe in their communities. They are also calling on all members of the society to remain calm in the face of adversity and stability will return to the society.

The Joint Services are also calling on any member of the public who may have information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of these acts to contact the Joint Services on telephone numbers 226-6978, 225-8196, 226-9888, 226-8645, 225-6940, 225-6941, 225-6411 or 911.
