Magistrate Chandra Sohan abandons Corentyne court with bat shit falling from heaven
Kaieteur News: Deplorable conditions at the Number Fifty-One Magistrate’s Court forced Magistrate Chandra Sohan to discontinue sitting on the bench yesterday. “I would not go back!”
“It is not fit for a Court and for a judicial officer! It is not healthy for anyone to go in there. People sitting and bat droppings being shed on their clothes and heads.”
He explained that the situation at Number Fifty-One, Corentyne, is that the building has no windows and the ceiling collapsed some time ago.
The roof is infested with bats whose droppings, the magistrate said, cause his skin to itch.
He believes that if respect is to be earned in the judicial system then proper buildings are a must.
Magistrate Chandra Sohan is holding the fort for Magistrate Krishendat Persaud who is now on leave for one week.
Earlier in the day, Magistrate Sohan sat at the Albion Magistrate’s Court and then made his way to Number Fifty-One Village.
He arrived there at about 10:15 hours, heard a few cases then decided to leave at about 11:30 hours.
Similar problems existed at the Albion Magistrate’s Court but those were resolved. There were no chambers for Magistrates and no wash room facilities among other things.
