The George Padmore Institute

without comments

The George Padmore Institute is an archive, educational resource and research centre housing materials relating to the black community of Caribbean, African and Asian descent in Britain and continental Europe.
Founded in 1991, we are based in North London where we often hold educational and cultural activities including talks and readings. We also publish relevant materials and are making our archives accessible to the general public.
The GPI is named after the Trinidadian, George Padmore, who was one of the major figures of the 20th century. The Institute was founded by the late John La Rose, the elder statesman of black Britain. John La Rose and a group of people connected with New Beacon Books wanted to establish a base to develop resources, share information and assemble archival material on the black population who had settled in Britain and on the countries from which they had originated. The main objective of the GPI is to make these resources available for use by the public. The Institute is a charity that is run on tried and tested methods of working and independent activity.
