Stabroek News: Even as the GDF continues to deny that it is aware of senior officers torturing soldiers during interrogation over a missing AK-47 rifle, Alvin Wilson who was in charge of the arms store yesterday said he was kicked about his rib cage and a false tooth smashed by members of the army’s investigating unit.
Wilson, a 53-year-old retiree … serving as a reservist corporal … told Stabroek News … that he has already made up his mind “I want nothing to do with the army anymore.” Wilson, Michael Dunn, Sharth Robertson and several other ranks who were implicated in the disappearance of the weapon have told of being shocked, pepper-sprayed and whipped with metal pipes by officers attached to the Military Criminal Investigation Department . …Wilson and Dunn have been released, Robertson, who the missing weapon was issued to, is still being detained by the army and … his relatives said he was still being mistreated. Wilson told Stabroek News yesterday that Robertson, from what he witnessed, suffered the most at the hands of the investigators.Acting Deputy Chief of Staff, Colonel Bruce Lovell told Stabroek News on Friday that “For the loss of the AK 47 rifle several persons were interrogated and we are not aware of any act of physical abuse during the interrogation process. We remain committed to investigating any such act,” Lovell assured.
…he was next handcuffed … he was then led out of the room and placed to kneel on stones in front of a palm tree. “Wilson you know your family doesn’t know your whereabouts you could be a dead man,” … one of the officers threatened … After kneeling on bricks for over ten minutes Wilson was taken to a pick-up where he met Robertson … the officers told him that Robertson told them that a deal had been struck for the two of them to sell the rifle … he denied this … carried into a room where sponge sealed the windows … placed on a bench and his face covered with a wet bag and a string pulled tight so that he could hardly breathe. His hands were bound and the officers poured water into the bag and asked him to breathe … he began to resist and in the process his false teeth fell out … one of the officers took the dentures and pelted them on the concrete floor smashing one of them. “Is either you find back the weapon or you dead here,” … one officer threatened. …all this time he was being whipped and kicked about the body and with the blows becoming unbearable he fell off the bench. On the floor … one of the officers dealt him several kicks with his ‘big boots’ damaging his rib cage … the officers asked him to stand but he was unable to do so. “I start to feel weak and dizzy and my feet became numb,” … he was eventually released and taken to a senior officer who made light of his complaints. Days after his ordeal Wilson said he still passes blood and was unable to sit upright. The father of five also said that sometimes his back cannot support his weight and as such he has to be lying most of the times. “I should have never been treated this way - look the time I spent in the army, I would not steal their weapon,” Wilson declared. He said he would not entirely blame the army for the mistreatment, noting that some of the senior officers he spoke with were shocked at the incident and expressed outage. “But those people at MCID must be investigated I am willing to give evidence against them at any court-martial because what they did to me is wrong,” Wilson asserted. In addition to being roughed up, Wilson was fined one month’s salary.
