American diplomat & provocateur killed in Sudan Tuesday
1/1/2008 8:48:35 AM An American diplomat who was shot while riding in a car in Sudan on Tuesday, died of the injuries caused by the attack. The diplomat, who was shot five times in the hand, shoulder and belly, had undergone surgery and was in stable condition. The incident took place a day after a joint African-United Nations force took over peacekeeping duties in Sudan’s violence-torn Darfur region.

NAIROBI: …diplomat … shot early Tuesday as he was coming home from a New Year’s Eve party at the British Embassy in Khartoum, the capital… He was later reported dead by The Associated Press. His driver, a Sudanese employee of the American Embassy, was also killed.
…the diplomat left the New Year’s party around 2:30 a.m., dropped off a friend and then proceeded to his home on Abdullah al-Taib street in central Khartoum. The neighborhood is near a large United Nations compound and home to many diplomats and aid workers. It is also considered very safe.
