PRESS RELEASEThe police are investigating a robbery under arms during which Police Corporal Nazir Alli of Sukhai Street , Better Hope, ECD, was shot and killed and his licensed firearm stolen.
Investigations revealed that about 2055h. last night Tuesday August 21, 2007 Nazir Alli, who is stationed at the Presidential Guard and was a driver attached to Former President Mrs. Janet Jagan, was socializing in front of his relatives’ business place along with his wife who was attending to the shop, his sister, another sister and her husband who were on holiday from overseas, and two friends.
During this time a man entered the premises, looked around in the shop and left. The same man returned later accompanied by another man and enquired about a roll of duct tape. At this stage the two men pulled out firearms and held Corporal Nazir Alli and the other persons at gunpoint and demanded cash and jewellery.
$9,000.00 cash along with a quantity of jewellery were taken away by the bandits who were about to leave the premises when Nazir Alli, who is a licensed firearm holder, attempted to confront them. He was however overpowered by the men during a scuffle over the firearm and shot several times about the body. The two bandits then took away Alli’s licensed .32 pistol and escaped.
Corporal Nazir Alli was rushed to the GPHC where he succumbed while receiving medical attention.
The police recovered four .32 spent shells and a warhead at the scene.
