DA admits ‘honest mistake’ with Hemant Megnath
After prosecutors failed to warn a judge about threats a rape suspect made to a Hollis woman who he later allegedly murdered, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes acknowledged that his office had made an “honest mistake.â€
Natasha Ramen had been the subject of several orders of protection after Hemant Megnath, a suspect accused of raping her in May 2005, started threatening the woman and her husband. Megnath, a 29-year-old Brooklyn resident, was arrested on March 20 and charged with murder after he allegedly slit Ramen’s throat.
After his arrest, Megnath was released on $5,000 bail and Ramen was listed as a witness in the case, prompting the first order of protect filed for Ramen. In October 2006, Megnath allegedly threatened to kill Ramen and her husband and was arrested on charges of aggravated harassment. Queens prosecutors did not pursue the case because the Ramen family did not press charges.
In a statement, Hynes said that the district attorney who was prosecuting the rape case was informed of the harassment arrest in Queens but did not inform the case’s judge. Typically, such an arrest would result in a bail increase or increases in other measures taken to restrain defendants.
