According to the relatives, the woman had just stepped out of her apartment when someone grabbed her from behind and slit her throat. She was picked up and rushed to the hospital but died hours after.

I think this was a very tragic and very sad story. Why did this young beautful guyanese woman in our community had to die in the hand of a ruthless killer? I read the newspapers and even saw it on the news and couldn’t believe that this happened. Natasha had a order of protection so why she wasn’t protected from this monster. We need to stand toether as a community and protect our people. Remember, our people left Guyana to come to U.S for a better life and it’s just so sad to see that we are killing each other. I think guilt got the best of this murderer so she wouldn’t testify and now look what happened - I hope he gets life in prison.

she should have been protected. That’s what’s wrong with out judicial system…the criminals are protected and the victims aren’t. This satin creature should not have been let out on bail…and from what I’ve read, he’d been making continuous threats to her. So why wasn’t she protected?

I want justice this person needs to pay for what he did to this young lady. The law needs to change a order of protection is not enough. Please protect us can’t you people see it’s not enough. I just lost a friend named Shanda also from Jamaica Queens over a week ago someone killed her in her apartment her killer is still on the lose another young women taken away for no reason at all. I pray that sick people get help before they kill this in not normal. I think this man needs to spend the rest of his life in jail no visits from family no phone calls and he should never see daylight again this may never happen but it should this victim will never have these privileges. Ramen, 20, was attacked last week just outside the door of her home in Queens. She died after suffering a “very deep wound, almost from ear to ear,” said police Lt. Salvatore Salerno, who led the homicide investigation. “It was very brutal.”
“My grandma ran up to her and tried to help her. She asked her, did she know who did it, and she shook her head ‘yes,’ but she couldn’t talk,” the landlord’s grandson, Daniel Kissoon, 17, told the New York Post.
Megnath, 29, was freed on $5,000 bail in the rape case after the court issued an order of protection. He had been due back in court for a pretrial hearing April 9.
In 2006, Megnath also was charged with making threats against Ramen and her family in retaliation for the rape allegation, police said.

as a friend of hemnath it came as a very big shock when i saw his picture in the paper. I was not there to know who did what or what really happened, but if he did indeed do such a crime he should be charged and punished. If he did not rape her then he had no reason in killing her. It is sad for such a young woman who hasnt seen much of life yet be taken away.

I think he did far more worse to himself by killing her, however questionable her character maybe. If he was innocent of rape, then surely he had a shot at proving that and not risking his entire life. Not to mention how bad this looks for all the hardworking immigrants who come here for a ‘better’ life. What a shame? Two young people in such a predicament, and one dead because of the other. It saddens me.

Hi, there people I am currently enrolled in a Crimonology program at Florida State University and I just want to give my sympathy to the victims family. But I might add question these things dear, how did her husband get avaliable ticket from New York to Guyana? Was he planning on leaving the country? Did he find out about the affair and then make her report rape, I mean afterall it was reported almost 10 months later, if I might add no murder waepon? Looks suspuicious. These are the questions we need to ask ourselves. I too am Guyanese and this is not what are heritage is about. Pray for both families.

Her husband wasn’t home when she was attacked, and if her landlord saw that she was getting murdered why didn’t he or she call 911 right away. Besides CNN says Hemant has an alibly.

In response to all of you: I’d like to say that i came across this blog researching about this girl. A friend told me the story and i was very disheartened to learn that at the age of 20 her life was taken away. i would like to say that as an outsider we can’t judge either party nor should we speculate because those of us that are not family members do not know the relationship among all thee of the individuals. One thing i must say is that, i am sad for the Natasha’s family and for her. may god rest her soul. No matter what the truth maybe in regards to her character, no reason can justify her murder. i personally feel for Natasha. My heart goes out to her and i am not even a guyanese. i am from suriname. i don’t know what all of you are trying to say when you attach each other with grammar, nationality or resident status. please all of you just pray for her and feel for her soul. how would you feel if someone that you know was murdered like that. i hope this killer is found and natasha gets her justice. i really do. and you all stop bickering like a bunch of fools!

I am a cousin of the murder suspect. In shock I have not the guts to call my family in New York but have silently read all the stories in the paper. I am praying for the Ramen family and on behalf of my family I want to say that we are good people and never expected such a tragic event to take place, especially with someone we love. Murder is what it is. Life is a gift from God and should be respected, I know that God above all is still in control and He will comfort the Ramen family. I can’t speak for what my cousin is charged with, it seems that there is some speculation but it is an unfortunate incident, especially when it is in our own community. I am deeply mourned.

I know that the legal system is not always fair. But this guy needs to be punished for what he did. I saw this on the news this afternoon, and I was so shocked and my heart went out to her. She was so beautiful and young. My god she was so young & had so much more to see of this world.

But when someone passes away, I always say god takes his away those precious ones so that they dont have to go through all the heartached & pain this world has to offer. God takes away all the good ones too soon.

I really hope this kid gets punished.

There are some pretty harsh things being typed on here and it’s pretty sad. Like i said before i know hemant and his family very well because we grew up next to eachother. However, i am not saying that hes so great and that he didn’t do anything. All we can all do is let the law deal with it and get their facts straight because as i hear on every other station theres something different to the story. I mean one station said the girl wrote 911 on the door with her blood, why not write who killed her since the paper said she said yes when the lady asked who killed her. Again, i read online where they charged him with pocession of a weapon but now i’m reading they havent found a weapon. I think its really sad that people are saying such things because she was illegal. That gives no right to anyone to take someones life. I just hope that both families can get to know the truth and if he did kill her then i’m sure the punishment will be served.

I think that everyone needs to be aware that the media distorts the truth in a way that most think is unimaginable. [Do not get me wrong, NO one deserves to have his/her life taken away, like in this case, so my prayers go out to natasha's family]. But keep in mind, the media’s job is to entertain the public (not to inform), because if the latter their prime duty, then you would know that natasha and her so-called loving husband were having marital issues and were on the verge of getting a divorce, but I guess that is not relevant here since the 103rd precinct did an excellent job in capturing the murderer and rapist..makes sense..does it not? like a perfect puzzle, every piece seems to fit so well…or so it seems. Did anyone for once think about what Mr. Megnath and HIS family are going through?

EXACTLY stranger…the next court date was proposed to be in about 2 weeks, why would Hemant jeopardize that? especially since charges were reduced from the initial rape charges [why were these charges reduced? well there was no eveidence]. As is the current issue, where is the evidence? was there an eyewitness, or wasn’t there? The inconsistencies of this entire case are quite misleading.

I knew Hermant very well and I am not here to defend him or degrade him, nor am I here to defend or degrade Natasha. I have a lot regarding this story within the past several days and I have also read all the messages from this site. As a West Indian myself, I am very disappointed in the way people are lashing out on both Hermant and Natasha. No one will ever know the truth about what happened between them, the day she was murdered or the day she was â€œrapedâ€. We need to let the justice system do their job, although they might fail us time and time again, we should not be judging anyone because it seems to me as if Hermant was arrested to show the public they have found the murderer. If my husband was murdered on and I had a plane ticket to go somewhere around the same time period, I would never get on that flight. Not only would I be devastated, but I would want to be with my husband until his body was taken to its final resting place. I think we are all looking too much into what the media has to say and therefore, we are formulating our own stories. I believe the husband should be looked at as a suspect and he should not have been allowed to leave the country. None of this makes any sense to me, if I was raped, I would not wait 10 months to report it. A few days, yes, but not 10 months. My heart goes out to Natasha, Hermant and their families and regardless of what we write in here, nothing will change the past. We just have to wait and wait for everything to unfold. Just remember, the truth will never be told because only half of the puzzle is still alive. We are too quick to lash out and throw stones, how about we come together as a community and give the support that is needed to both families. Why would anyone kill someone when they are days away from going to court? When they know that if they killed this person, they would be the first one looked at? Where is the murder weapon? If Natasha was attacked Thursday morning and died Thursday night, why did she not use the time between to tell anyone who her attacker was? Why did she write â€œ911â€ with her blood rather than the initials of her attacker? If she was screaming, where was her husband or anyone for that matter? If the landlord saw, why did she not call the person? Why did she ask Natasha if she knew who her killer was if she did in fact witness what happened? I think there is a lot more that will be revealed that will shock everyone.

As a last thought, if this were to be happening in your family, how would you feel if you got online and read these â€œmoral bashingâ€ post of either the victim or the suspect? When you write your post, please keep those who are mourning or grieving in mind.

In response to propagandapress. I understand that sometimes reports are made much later than when a rape happens. However, donâ€™t you think a person who is arrested for a rape that happened a year ago would stand a good chance of not being convicted? At this point, testing cannot be done to determine whether or not the woman was raped and nor can they determine who the rapist was because the bodily fluids are no longer existent. I know that sometimes women need time to cope with what has happened to them, but reporting a rape immediately would always work in their favor because more evidence would be available to the police other than two stories. It makes you wonder if Natasha was having an affair with Hermant which is one of the reasons she went to the police long after the rape happened, if it did happen. It was said she was raped at his house after he tied her to his bed and she was only at his house because he was going to sell her real estate. If he was a broker, chances are he had an office, why not meet him there? I would never go to someoneâ€™s house to look at real estate. You either go to the property or have the broker come to you. Maybe she did not look at the whole picture because she was very young. But I hope a lot of young girls out there learn from this. Too many young girls are on the internet meeting boys and sadly enough taking very risky chances. Again, we will never know what really happened between these two, but I think there is a lot more to this story that no one will ever know. So please if any young girls are out there reading these postings and or the news articles, learn from someone elseâ€™s mistake! If you are really afraid of someone, go to the police and insist that they do something about it. You have to be persistent when you want something in life or else the world just walks all over you. Also, I am just curious, why were she not accompanied by any of her family members if Hermant was threatening to kill her if she testified, especially with the trial date rapidly approaching. Also, someone mentioned that he had sent a text message saying he was going to kill her. This is the only time I think I would defend Hermant, he knew a lot about computers and I can guarantee you he was not that stupid to send a traceable text message threatening the life of anyone. I think had he really been harassing Natasha and her family, they would see to it that someone was done to him especially since he was already out on bail for raping her. There are a lot of laws that are in place to protect them, so why did they not take advantage of them?

Regardless of whether or not he raped her, he was stalking her, there is solid proof of that, phone calls he made not only to Natasha and her Husband but to her mother-in-law as well, she had an order of protection against him, why wasn’t she protected? Why did the judge grant $5000 bail, which is pocket change to a real-estate broker?
Whether or not he raped her - he MURDERED her and needs to be given the most severe punishment for that.

No one knows definietly if she was raped, if they had an affair, if he killed her etc. We only know what the media told us. The scary thing about it is the effect it will probably have on the West Insian Community. We things like rape and molestation occur families, woman and/or children tend not to speak out. She was very brave to press charges to begin with. Its hard for victims to speak out and she took a stand. The sad part is that she did not receive the protection ANYONE in that situation deserves. It shouldn’t be a LESSON FOR WOMEN but the COMMUNITY. When something happens like this people need to come together and protect. I hope this does not perpetuate a fear for women to stand up against their attackers.

Let the LESSON be to not take things that are serious and behave as if it is trivial. As if it is a process. The mental anguish is hard enough.

I honestly hope that her efforts to find justice is not minimalized by this monster’s action and that her murder is looked at in vain…as if it was her lesson.

Ok, in response to those who are questioning why Natasha took so long to come forward with the rape - from what I understand, she came along from Guyana illegally, therefore when he raped her she was too frightened to come forward because of her status.

Shortly after that she met her husband who married her, as a result she gained permanent residence in USA, which then gave her the courage to report the rape.

If Hemant is so innocent, then why was he calling members ot her family, threatening to kill them if they didn’t tell him where to find her?

All this info is gathered from people that live in her building, her mother-in-law said that Hemant has been harrassing her for a long time, which is why she was issued an order of protection from him.

Further more, what makes her case even stronger, Natasha did not die right away - she was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital and lived a few hours in which case she may have very well identified Hemant in some way as the murderer before she died.

All I have to say to all of you out there who says he harassed and threatened Natashaâ€™s family, why did they not go to the police and have him arrested? Oh that is correct he supposedly harassed them on October 21 and 22 and was arrested but they did not insist he remain behind bars for violating the restraining order. I donâ€™t know how much you guys know about the law but if he was out on bail for raping a woman who he then harassed and threatened, it would have been extremely easy for this family to have him put back behind bars. All they had to do was to the police and if they did nothing, there are the courts and the media. Nothing of what this family makes sense and because we have not been given a comment from the suspect or his family, we should not condemn or convict him. There are always two sides to a story. No one deserves to be raped but I am sorry she would not have been sent back to Guyana if she went to the police and reported the crime. Of course everyone thinks Hermant is the murdered, because is the easiest thing for us to believe. Sometimes the justice system takes the easy way out just to paste a face to a crime rather than looking at the bigger picture. Hopefully, the investigators will not take the easy way out and pin a crime on someone because that to them is the only logical answer at this time. They really do need to look at the husbandâ€¦.why is he not here with her family which is also his family through marriage? If someone really loves their spouse and something this tragic happens, they would make certain they are at least in the same country!

NYC - also just as an fyi…there are hotlines that are available to anyone who has been rape or been a victim of violence to seek advice and referrals for help and you can get all this information and remain anonymous. These posters are posted everywhere, so at some point I think Natasha would have seen one of these posters and had she been raped and it really did bother her, legal or not, she had options. She chose not to use the resources available to her.

Natasha took this evidence to court, which is why she was issued an order of protection against him. Now the question remains, why wasn’t she protected?

NYC this is a topic I am studying right now so I feel very confident in discussing this and why people act a certain way after being abused and from what the media has told us, Natashaâ€™s reaction to the rape makes no sense. Also, yes there are posters and places that offer help. My parents live in NY and I visit often and yes I do see posters that offer help to abused women. Maybe you never noticed them because it is easy to miss something we are not looking for. She could have also did research on the internet if she wanted to seek help. First of all, no one knows if she was really raped and I am not saying she wasnâ€™t but if she gained strength to press charges ten months later then obviously the â€œrapeâ€ was bothering her and she could have asked for help from the thousands of free clinics they have in NYC. Just because there are resources available to help victims, does not mean that victims will have the strength to face what happened and seek help.
Of course the rape was bothering her, that’s why she reported it eventually.
On that note, rape centers are sworn by confidentiality, whose to say that she never seeked help? It’s not like the center is going to broadcast it if she did. With most of those places, they offer you a place to confront your feelings, with the comfort of never having to give your real identity, so neither you nor I know whether or not she seeked help or not. Perhaps she did, and perhaps they encouraged her to report it? In most cases that is what happens.
Like I said earlier, I am not gathering any information from the media, I am relying on what I hear from people that live in her building and neighbors that knew her.

NYC - You are right, a rape center will never reveal your identity but she did have the help if she was so bothered with the rape. And no I am not looking at this the way I want, I am looking at from all different logical angles and none of it makes sense. We will always hear the side of everyone else closely involved with this matter and never the truth. If Natasha had identified the killer at the hospital, that would have been all over the news by now. I am fully aware pf what agencies can or cannot do but I also know very well what a â€œnormalâ€ reaction to a crisis is and what isnâ€™t. Natashaâ€™s reaction to being raped was anything but normal. She could have gotten a de-briefing from a counselor and moved towards prosecution sooner than she did. If Hermant was calling her and harassing her as much as the family cliam, they could have done something about it. This is America, not Guyana, there is a lot more help out there, especially for women

I live about 30 miles from the ramdens and I used to hear stories that she used to sneak out of the house and go clubbing on weekends. She also couldn’t make oil roti. It came out too rubbery and hard.

Let them speak their minds. I would first like to address the comment made by Jake….you are IGNORANT!!! Why was it necessary for you to bring race to the discussion. This country is made up of foreignersâ€¦we are its strength and its progress (so if you don’t have anything constructive to say, please blog-off). Indeed, a tragedy has taken place. Natasha did not deserve to die, especially the manner in which it took place. On the defense of the accused, the law of the land is that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Until I see conclusive physical evidence about the alleged rape commited by Hemant, and especially evidence concerning the murder, I will not be too quick to judge him. Of course, we have heard about the alleged death threats and so and so on from Hemantâ€¦but have any of your seen any such evidence to judge him so harshly. The news does not always have accurate informationâ€¦.right now everything reported is mostly speculation. Has it occurred to you that perhaps, he could be innocent. Why say things that you might regret later. Let the system run its courseâ€¦justice will be served. If Hemant is found guilty, he will be given a fit punishment.

The girl was probably scared of the husband that is why she cried rape. May i suggest they look at the husband for the killer. A lot of the posts on this site are coming from ignorant people and regardless of what we write in here it will never make a difference because we are not in a court room, we are not judges or jurors and we were not there from beginning to end with the â€œrelationshipâ€ between Hermant and Natasha. Just for the record, I am a woman and yes I do know the statistics of un-reported rape each year and that is just they thing they are un-reported, not reported several months after the fact. Maybe a few of you should pick up a book and read a little and then come in here to post something that makes sense. Hermant may or may not be guilty and Natasha could have or not have been raped by Hermant. WE WILL NEVER KNOW! All I am saying is if someone reports rape after months of it happening, then it obviously was on her mind and she chose not to talk to anyone about it, not even her husband who she supposedly had such a good relationship with.
The laws in America favors women very much and all she has to do is accuse a man of doing something to her and he gets arrested. She obviously was smart enough to know this much. One article stated she has been in NY since she was 15, so she obviously went to school here, you think at no point in school she was taught about abuse and things to do about it? If she applied to become a nurse obviously she has a high school education, you cannot make it that far without knowing some of your rights in this country. She wasnâ€™t afraid to go to school illegally but she was afraid to go to the cops? I am not posting my messages solely based on what I heard from neighbors or the media but I am posting on studies that have been done that points to everything that have been said thus far by Natashaâ€™s family makes no sense. Their reaction to all the drama Hermant supposedly put them through does not add up.

Look at this blog alone, and think about it, look how many people are degrading her character, don’t you think she thought about this before deciding to report it? Nursing programs don’t require anything as a pre-requisite, perhaps she took the GED - which is suffice, did you think about that?

From what I understand, she came to think country 2 yrs ago, so that would make her 18 at the time, in which case she would not have attended school here, and even if she did come here at 15, there is no indication that she attended school, don’t you have to have some form of identification to attend school? What is she going to school with? A fake passport?
