English novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton is the one who coined the phrase, “the pen is mightier than the sword” and I really hope he wasn’t full of shit. Given today’s Orwellian headlines, I just as soon delude myself into thinking that a storyteller like me can do just as much damage to the forces of evil as John Brown, Che Guevara and the Black Panthers did. One thing that gives me hope for the pen (and keeps me from shooting pigs or bombing buildings) is Star Wars–and that’s what I want this Christmas: To be the next George Lucas, so I can a) afford to donate more than a measly dollar to the likes of Amnesty International and b) have the kind of effect Lucas has had on the dominant culture.
After it was released in 2005, some right-wing groups called for a boycott of Revenge of the Sith–and while there’s nothing inherently noble about being banned (believe me, I know), it was still nice to see the right feel just that threatened by what is essentially a cross between an Arthurian morality play and a 1930s Saturday morning serial.
According to peace activist Brian Fanelli, “Actor Hayden Christensen, who starred in the film as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, also commented on the political content of the film. Before the film’s release on May 19th, the Ottawa Sun asked the young actor if the film ‘takes metaphoric shots at the warmongering politics of U.S. presidents Richard Nixon and the two George Bushes.’ Christensen answered, ‘absolutely’Â … Conservatives can boycott the film or complain about some of its political undertones, but that has not halted the Star Wars juggernaut. In its four day opening release, Revenge of the Sith made over $158 million at the U.S. box office, pulverizing records. Worldwide, the film grossed more than $300 million its opening weekend.”
Amen–can you imagine how many leftist charities would benefit if I was that successful ..?
And according to USA Today, “Josh Griffin, a self-described conservative Star Wars fan’, says he cringed when he heard the dialogue at a recent advance screening of Sith. ‘Star Wars is meant to be a children’s movie … not to be a political statement about someone’s liberal ideology’.”
TRANSLATION: Griffin is clearly petrified that something as famous and popular as Star Wars could turn the masses to the left.
Star Wars is a six part saga about how a democracy is overthrown from within, bit by bit, via a series of deceptions. “… one of the main features of the back story was to tell how the Republic became the Empire,” Lucas said at the Cannes Film Festival in France. “I hope this doesn’t come true in our country. Maybe the film will awaken people to how dangerous this situation is.”
Amen–I’ve been trying to “awaken people” my entire literary career …
Here’s what Lucas is referring to: In the second part of the saga, it’s revealed that a clone army was secretly created YEARS before the galactic senate could vote whether or not to approve its creation and YEARS before there was any actual threat to the galaxy (a threat which would later prove to be fabricated). Sound familiar? It damn well better. The Saturday, February 11th, 2006 edition of the Los Angeles Times reported the following, “… huddled with aides at the White House, President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair were not sure there was enough evidence to convince the Security Council. Without the council’s explicit authorization, their plans for an invasion to depose Saddam Hussein could be difficult to defend under international law. Bush proposed an alternative: paint a U.S. spy plane in United Nations colors and see if that didn’t tempt Hussein’s forces to shoot at it. In any case, he said, the war was ‘penciled in’ for March 10 and the United States would go ahead with or without a second U.N. resolution. Blair replied that he was ’solidly with’ the president.”
So if it wouldn’t have been “weapons of mass destruction” or Saddam Hussein’s supposed links with 9-11, it simply would’ve been some other lie

There’s a great website called whatreallyhappened.com which explains that, historically speaking, the aforementioned is unfortunately nothing new, and it opens with the following preamble: “Because most people prefer living in peace to bloody and horrific death in war, any government that desires to initiate a war usually lies to their people to create the illusion that support for the war is the only possible choice they can make.” And this is the case in the land of the free as well as in a galaxy far, far away.
On Saturday, October 28 in front of the Federal Building on 2nd & Marion, the Seattle branch of ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) marched in solidarity with a nationwide protest against the invasion/occupation of Iraq. About a thousand people showed, but I couldn’t help wondering how many more would’ve came if it were known that someone as famous as Lucas would be there? Everyone contributes in their own way–and being the next George Lucas is how I prefer to contribute …

A very well-tied-in analysis. Just like Palpatine, Bush created an enemy in order to launch a war of attrition to gain all the emergency powers from the Senate that he could. The Senate gleefully traded their republic for an empire for a false sense of security.
Of course, Dubya is too dumb to be a Sith. It was Rove all along. And it looks like at least for the next couple of years he will have to work with the Dems. It remains to be seen what kind of work they will do…

When I had been running III Publishing, a small press, for a few years a remarkable manuscript was sent to me. It was titled A.D. and was submitted by Saab Lofton. The writing was strong, the plot was interesting, and conceptually it was brilliant. I was struggling to sell my titles at the time, this was when Barnes & Noble and Borders were wiping out many of the independent bookstores that sold my books, but I took a chance on A.D.
I had 2000 copies printed. A.D. sold remarkably well, quickly becoming my 2nd best-selling title. It sold about 1000 copies the first year and in the next few years all the copies were sold. There was continuing demand for the book, but around then my distributor went bankrupt and I decided to stop publishing. A.D. should have been reprinted. More than that, it should have been picked up by a larger publisher with stronger sales channels.
A.D. was Saab Lofton’s first novel. I read the manuscript of his second novel, and it too should have been published by a major publisher. Saab Lofton’s voice deserves to be heard. What he says may not please everyone, but that is always the case with great writers.
