The Hidden Politics of Deficit Spending by Michael Parenti

without comments

When government expends more than it collects in revenues, this is known as deficit spending. To meet its yearly deficits, it borrows from wealthy individuals and financial institutions in the United States and abroad.

The accumulation of these yearly deficits constitutes the national debt.

Malnutrition is more common in India than in Sub-Saharan Africa.

with 2 comments

Malnutrition is more common in India than in Sub-Saharan Africa. One in every three malnourished children in the world lives in India.
Malnutrition limits development and the capacity to learn. It also costs lives: about 50 per cent of all childhood deaths are attributed to malnutrition. Read the rest of this entry »

US military and their Zarqawi hoax

with 2 comments

bush zarqawi - master of disguiseBy Thomas E. Ricks
The Washington Post

WASHINGTON — The U.S. military is conducting a campaign to magnify the role of the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, according to internal military documents and officers familiar with the program. The effort has raised his profile in a way that some military-intelligence officials believe may have overstated his importance and helped the Bush administration tie the war to the organization responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks. An Open Letter To All Guyanese Politicians

without comments

While we are aware of the obvious demands of your time associated with your position, it is out of a sense of frustration and desperation that we address this letter to all political leaders/activists in Guyana in the hope that you may work together towards some form of national reconciliation. We will not make any claims or assertions of being experts on Guyanese politics, however it remains obvious to the Diaspora that we have not received the proper leadership from our elected representatives who frequently appear more interested in attributing blame for past injustices and acts of indiscretion than they are in solving the rampant crime and abject poverty within our country. Reparations, A Fundamental Issue Of Social Justice

with 2 comments

My own interest in the reparations movement started in the 1970’s when my teacher and mentor at Stanford, Dr. St. Clair Drake, arranged for me to attend the Sixth Pan-African Conference in Dar es Salem, Tanzania.

Born Into Cellblocks

without comments

kid in cell blockTwenty years ago, a man was executed by fellow drug people on the border after a career of 50 or 60 killings. He began his bloody career when he was 13 and was then stuffed into an adult Mexican prison. I remember going to the cops in that Mexican border town and cajoling my way in to see his mug shot and rap sheet, all this while a prisoner screamed under torture in the next room. The 13-year-old killer made it all the way to age 27. He never used a gun. He favored scissors or a screwdriver.

Exposing propaganda - US the greatest threat to world peace

without comments

I am a senior history major at the university and have taken classes with both Quataert and her husband, Donald Quataert. An international Gallup poll found Canadian citizens view the United States as the greatest threat to world peace. An informal Time magazine poll found 80 percent of Europeans view the United States, not Iran, as the greatest threat to world peace. These nations, Israel aside, are by far the most sympathetic to our cause.

DEPORTED FOR FARE DODGING

without comments

The Caribbean islands have long complained that they were unable to cope with deportees who had no connection with the Caribbean and were versed in sophisticated criminal techniques. Between 1997 and 2002, some 25,000 criminal aliens were deported to the English, French, Spanish and Dutch-speaking nations and territories of the Caribbean. More than 12,000 were sent to the Dominican Republic, at least 6,000 to Jamaica, about 1,800 to Haiti, more than 1,000 to Trinidad and Tobago, close to 800 to Guyana and almost 500 to the Bahamas.

How Exxon has gotten away with a financial windfall.

without comments

exxon_valdez.jpg As Exxon appeals the $5 Billion punitive damages award against it, the company claims it shouldn’t have to pay that award because the company has already suffered enough financially. We disagree.

Exxon cites the $1 Billion it paid the Federal and Alaska governments in 1991 to settle their civil and criminal claims. Exxon also says it’s spent about $2 Billion on environmental clean-up and land restoration. Read the rest of this entry »

Study: AP Covers Palestinian Deaths at a Rate Vastly Lower Than Israeli Deaths

without comments

boycott israelEditors who use the AP newswire in good faith may be unaware that AP’s coverage of the Middle East conflict does not meet the journalistic standards we expect from AP.

SEATTLE: A new study released at the convention of the American Society of Newspaper Editors today reveals that Associated Press coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict significantly distorts reality, essentially over-reporting the number of Israelis killed in the conflict and underreporting the number of Palestinians killed. Significant findings of the one-year statistical study include:

Informant Told Lie Detector that Corrupt U.S. Agents Helped Narcos Protect Drug Crops from
Fumigation Raids
May 16, 2006
Please Distribute Widely
A major piece of the puzzle of U.S. law enforcement in Colombia corruption has fallen into place. An anonymous source has leaked to Narco News correspondent Bill Conroy a report from the Drug Enforcement Administration that further strengthens allegations of DEA and other agents collaborating with Colombian drug traffickers and paramilitaries. It also makes some surprising claims about the U.S.-sponsored drug crop fumigation program. Read the rest of this entry »

Dr. Al-Arian Suffers Under Deplorable Prison Conditions

without comments

Tampa—

The persecution of Dr. Sami Al-Arian in the U.S. prison system continues. Last Thursday, May 4, Dr. Al-Arian was hauled from Orient Road Jail in Tampa at 3:45 a.m. to a federal prison in Tallahassee, Florida. He was placed in the Special Housing Unit (SHU), a section of the prison reserved to temporarily house convicted inmates who violate prison rules. Prison administrators said they received a letter, believed to be from federal marshals, which contained the ridiculous allegation that Dr. Al-Arian is a danger to other inmates. This claim was made to justify the torturous conditions under which Dr. Al-Arian has been placed in Tallahassee.
