Guyanese Parliament dissolved
Wednesday, 03 May 2006
Guyana’s parliament has been dissolved paving the way for general elections.
Yesterday afternoon, President Bharrat Jagdeo issued the proclamation dissolving the eighth parliament after being advised that it had concluded its work.
This included the amendment of Article 61 of the Constitution, which extends the August 4 constitutional deadline for holding elections by one month.
The move comes as leader of the opposition Peoples National Congress Reform, Robert Corbin, who opposed the Constitution Amendment Bill, walked out of Parliament yesterday, saying they wished to disassociate their party from the bill.
The opposition has threatened to take the government to the High Court or the Caribbean Court of Justice, but Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Doodnauth Singh told the National Assembly that, government is prepared to defend, in the most forcible way, whatever litigation is offered.
National elections were constitutionally due by August 4, 2006 but have been delayed, as the Guyana Elections Commission indicated that it would not be ready before August 30.
