China failed to meet nearly half of its environmental goals from 2000 to 2005, according to the State Environmental Protection Administration. Out of 20 environmental goals set for the five-year period, eight were not achieved. Discharges of sulphur dioxide should have been cut by 10 per cent by 2005 but levels have actually increased by 27 per cent. High consumption of energy and power following China’s rapid economic development after 2002 are to blame.
