villagers in eastern China attack local factories for polluting water supply
Around two hundred villagers in eastern China have attacked local factories they blame for polluting their water supply. The villagers reportedly attacked three factories and a sewage plant in Fujian province.
They told the South China Morning Post that waste products from the factories and sewage plant had poisoned the water supply, damaged crops and created a lingering stench. Protests against polluting industries have become increasingly common across rural China. The protest is also symptomatic of growing unrest amongst the rural poor who feel they are being left behind by China’s growing urban economy.
