Ronald Waddellwho is going to be killed next IN Guyana now that Wadell is out of the way? we’re just wondering since as the election cycle gets into full gear all bets seem to be off and gun diplomacy is back in play.

  1. How could Waddell’s support for the Buxton Resistance be called ‘decent’
    Stabroek : Thursday, February 23th 2006

    Dear Editor,

Imagine that you are a female who suffered rape at the hands of the “Buxton Resistance”. Imagine that you are a person who lost a relative or friend at the hands of the “Buxton Resistance”.

Okay. So these things happen. But then some journalist (the fact that he was African Guyanese is irrelevant to the issue) stands up and thanks God for supporting the Resistance.

But it doesn’t end there. His wife then stands up and says that the journalist was a “decent” person even though he had supported the Resistance.

But it doesn’t end there. The journalist’s family then stands up and says that his message was “misunderstood” and that he was a hero.

Bonita Harris and Ovid Waddell Smith could have simply said that Ronald Waddell was wrong in supporting the Resistance. But they defended Waddell’s views.

The “decency” of Waddell extends only as far as the colour of his skin. If he were not an African Guyanese would his call be tolerated as decent? If he was an Indian or and Amerindian would they still say that he was a “decent hero”.

You see the problem don’t you? There are some in our society whose perception of decency has been tainted.

What does this have to do with anything?

Well, decency is what we consider moral. Our morals determine the laws and guidelines we set ourselves to live by. When our views on morals differ so significantly then we have differing views on our laws and values that we live by.

    Yours faithfully
