Guyana’s worst environmental disaster

On August 19, 1995, the Omai Gold Mines tailings dam collapsed and spilled 3.2 million cubic metres of cyanide-tainted waste into the Omai River and then into the Essequibo, the country’s largest river. This is considered Guyana’s worst environmental disaster.
