Zapatista Leader Comandante Ramona Dies
Comandante Ramona, a leader of Mexico’s Zapatista rebel movement has died after a long struggle with a kidney disease. Zapatista leader Marcos, said: “The world has lost one of those women it requires. Mexico has lost one of the combative women it needs and we, we have lost a piece of our heart.”

$2 trillion war to nowhere - noble cause indeed
A new study by Columbia University economist Joseph E. Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize in economics in 2001, and Harvard lecturer Linda Bilmes concludes that the total costs of the Iraq war could top the $2 trillion mark. Reuters reports this total, which is far above the US administration’s prewar projections, takes into account the long term healthcare costs for the 16,000 US soldiers injured in Iraq so far.
Taleban rejects Hamid Karzai’s offer of contact
A Taleban spokesman has rejected Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s offer of contact. Mr Karzai had told the news organization, the Associated Press, that he would be happy for Taleban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar to “get in touch” if he wanted peace. Mohammed Hanif, who claims to speak for the Taleban, said Mr Karzai was a “mouthpiece of Americans” and saw it as a move to weaken their morale. On Monday Mullah Omar promised to step up attacks against the US forces in Afghanistan in 2006. The Taleban regime, toppled in late 2001, are fighting to oust the Karzai government.
Guyana’s worst environmental disaster
On August 19, 1995, the Omai Gold Mines tailings dam collapsed and spilled 3.2 million cubic metres of cyanide-tainted waste into the Omai River and then into the Essequibo, the country’s largest river. This is considered Guyana’s worst environmental disaster.
Drugs master plan
Nothing much happening
In June last year, the government unveiled a five-year drug strategy master plan which included such innovations as wiretapping legislation and an enforcement post near the Orinoco Delta, but six months on nothing has been done and there is no indication as to when the proposals will be implemented. Most of the cuts will come out of the hides of the very poorest among us. Afghan President seeks reconcilliation with Taleban leader Mullah Omar
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has suggested the Taleban leader Mullah Omar contact him with a view to reconciliation. In an interview with the news organisation the Associated Press President Karzai said he did not expect Mullah Omar to come out of hiding. US drops bomb on six Iraqi teens in Ramadi
Witnesses: US Bombing of Ramadi Neighborhood Kills 6 Teens
“In the western city of Ramadi say a US air strike killed six teenagers Saturday. The teenagers were reportedly gathered near their homes when their neighborhood was shelled by US military planes.”
Unidentified Ramadi resident: “They were children, only 16 and 17 years old. They were playing here and cleaning the sewage near their houses. The planes hit them with rockets, we did find their bodies but flesh and blood.”
