Democratic Liberation Forces of Rwanda leaves Congo to disarm
Fighters from the largest Rwandan rebel group, The Democratic Liberation Forces of Rwanda, have left their bases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and returned home to disarm. The fighters who were formed from ethnic Hutu extremists were met by Rwandan army officers and demobilisation officials. The rebels fled to the DR Congo after the Rwandan genocide of 1994 in which some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were slaughtered. Rwanda has twice invaded DR Congo trying to wipe out the rebels and their presence has led to years of fighting in the region. The rebels were supposed to be disarmed under a 2002 peace deal.
